AeroMACS Capabilities Validated Through Worldwide Projects

AeroMACS Is the Global Standardized Technology Selected to Improve Connectivity on the Airport Surface

 

CLACKAMAS, OR – October 4, 2018 – The WiMAX Forum®, the leading nonprofit organization that certifies and promotes the compatibility and interoperability of broadband wireless products based upon IEEE Standard 802.16, with the cooperation of its member companies, continues to advocate through a wide variety of worldwide activities about the capabilities and value of Aeronautical Mobile Airport Communication System (AeroMACS).

AeroMACS projects will be highlighted at the ICAO Thirteenth Air Navigation Conference (ICAO ANC-13), taking place in Montreal, Canada on October 9-19, 2018. This meeting is key to the global aviation community. It provides a set of recommendations related to flight safety, air navigation capacity, efficiency and other performance areas of the air navigation system. These recommendations will be submitted for approval to the ICAO Council for endorsement by the 40th Session of the Assembly in 2019.

In China, both the China State Radio Commission and the Radio Commission of CAAC support the AeroMACS technology. CAAC have been formally authorized with the frequency to install AeroMACS in 110 airports and provide service in China. ATMB of CAAC has already deployed AeroMACS networks in 13 airports since 2014. The AeroMACS development in China with the support of Aviation Data Communication Corporation (ADCC) has progressed from basic system performance testing, D-TAXI assistance application for aircraft and ground vehicle development. Two working papers related to AeroMACS will be presented at the ICAO ANC-13 by China: AeroMACS Development in China and Runway Incursion Avoidance Research of CAAC, China.

In Japan, AeroMACS performance has been demonstrated in Haneda and Sendai airports. AeroMACS provided high-capacity data transmission, reducing system introduction and application development costs. Additionally, AeroMACS has higher communication link security than current aeronautical communication systems. It can be effectively used to share a large and varied amount of information among air traffic controllers, pilots, airline companies, airport operators, such as SWIM, on both the airport surface and during take-off and landing. A working paper related to AeroMACS will be presented by Japan at the ICAO ANC-13: AeroMACS for Air-To-Ground Communication and Connectivity to SWIM. Several AeroMACS projects are being contemplated, under consideration and with installation in progress around the world. In the United States, AeroMACS has been confirmed to be widely deployed through the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Telecommunications Infrastructure (FTI) program. Other sites in Europe though EUROCONTROL and SESAR JU have undergone testing, additionally an AeroMACS project expansion has started in Portugal. In Latin America, AeroMACS projects are being evaluated and installation has been approved in Brazil. WiMAX Forum AeroMACS Manufacturers have committed to delivering complete WiMAX Forum Certified systems (Base Stations and Devices) to the market in 2018. AeroMACS is internationally standardized, globally harmonized and provides scalable model for the aviation industry. It operates in the protected and licensed aviation spectrum band from 5091 MHz to 5150 MHz, designated on a worldwide basis by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to support the increasing need for data communications and information sharing enabling ground-to-aircraft communications through hundreds of fixed and mobile applications. Its benefits extend beyond a higher throughput in ground communications.
